An iconic movie of the ’80s gets a new life, and a lot more songs, when Walnut Street Theatre presents9 to 5: The Musical to kick start its 206th season, opening tomorrow, September 10.
The movie version of 9 to 5 starred Dolly Parton, and while she’s not in this cast, her presence is still palpable, because the country star wrote the show’s music and lyrics.
The storyline remains the same: Three female co-workers who are darn sick and tired of their nasty, egotistical, lecherous boss hatch a plan to get even and take control of the company. The trio enacts a revenge plot, by kidnapping the boss and tying him up in incredibly funny fashion.
Meanwhile, back at the office, the three gals make it their business to right many company wrongs.
Not everything goes as planned, but these ladies won’t be denied their opportunity to climb the corporate ladder to success.
The musical adds its own flavor to the plot, with lively choreography plus 16 news songs by Parton.
The production was recognized with four Tony Award nominations, including Best Original Score, a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Show Album and a record-breaking 15 Drama Desk Award nominations, including Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Music and Outstanding Lyrics.
There are power ballads, rockabilly, and of course, the title tune which is likely to stick in your head after you leave the theater.
